Common Self-Limiting Beliefs About Money and Success in Midlife

Sara Fernandes

By the time we reach midlife, we’ve accumulated years of experiences—along with deeply ingrained beliefs about money, success, and what’s possible for us moving forward. But what if those beliefs are holding us back? In this guest post, Sara Fernandes—life coach, course creator, and editor of LM Magazine—breaks down some of the most common self-limiting beliefs that keep people stuck in financial struggle and fear of change. She shares her own powerful journey of overcoming setbacks, rebuilding her life after financial loss, and taking bold leaps toward entrepreneurship in her 50s.

By the time we reach midlife, we’ve accumulated decades of experiences, lessons, and unfortunately, beliefs that may not serve us anymore—especially when it comes to money and success.

Many of us carry silent, deeply ingrained thoughts that hold us back from financial abundance and new opportunities. The good news? These beliefs aren’t set in stone. Once you recognize them, you can rewrite your story and step into a more empowered version of yourself. Let’s face it, if you are reading this, chances are you’ve heard about self-image scripting and you are on your way to being the person you know you want to be.

For me, I’m here now but it hasn’t always been this way. At 40, my life was turned upside down by the 2010 economic crash. Everything I had built, everything I thought was secure, suddenly wasn’t. I left life as I knew it behind and started over in a new country, unsure of what the future held. Then, at 50, I took another leap—I left my job to pursue entrepreneurship in the self-development field. These were some of the scariest decisions I’ve ever made, but they were also the most empowering. And if I could do it, so can you.

1. “It’s Too Late for Me to Start Over”
One of the biggest myths about midlife is that it’s too late to change careers, start a business, or build wealth. In reality, some of the most successful people didn’t hit their stride until their 40s, 50s, or even 60s. Vera Wang became a designer at 40. Louise Hay published her first book at the age of 50. Colonel Sanders founded KFC in his 60s. Your past does not determine your future—your mindset and actions do.

I know what it’s like to feel like time has slipped away. But I also know what it’s like to take a risk and realize that midlife is just the beginning of something new and exciting.

It’s never too late to learn, grow, and create a new path for myself.

2. “I’m Not Good with Money”
Many women (and people in general) have been conditioned to believe they’re not “naturally” good with money. Whether this belief comes from childhood messages or past financial mistakes, it creates a cycle of avoidance and fear around finances.

For years, I struggled with financial insecurity. I thought I had to accept my circumstances rather than take control of them. But I learned that managing money is a skill—one that anyone can develop. And one I’ve been talking about for years on Money, W(h)ine & Cheese.

Managing money is a skill, and skills can be learned at any age. I am capable of making smart financial choices.

3. “I Shouldn’t Want More”
There’s a common belief, especially among women, that wanting financial success or wealth is selfish or greedy. Many of us have been taught to put others first and not prioritize our own financial well-being.

I used to struggle with this myself. I worried that wanting financial abundance meant I wasn’t grateful for what I had. But I’ve learned that wealth isn’t just about personal gain—it’s about freedom, security, and the ability to help others.

Wealth allows me to create security for myself and generosity for others. The more I have, the more I can give.

4. “I’m Too Old to Compete”
In a world that glorifies youth, midlife individuals often feel like they’ve missed their shot at success. Whether it’s starting a new career, launching a side hustle, or learning new technology, many believe younger generations have the advantage.

I had these doubts when I started my entrepreneurial journey at 50. I wondered if I could keep up, if I had what it took. But I quickly realized that my experience, wisdom, and resilience gave me an edge. And that got me excited to not only teach about managing money by creating budgets, but also teaching about side hustles (without the hustle) that feel aligned with one’s values.

My experience, wisdom, and resilience are valuable assets. There is space for me to thrive at any age.

5. “I’ve Made Too Many Financial Mistakes”
Guilt and regret over past financial choices can make people hesitant to try again. Whether it’s debt, investments gone wrong, or missed opportunities, many believe they are doomed to repeat past mistakes.

I’ve made financial mistakes, and for a long time, I let them define me. But those mistakes were lessons, not life sentences. I learned from them and used them to build a stronger financial future and so can anyone. There’s a reason we have a big windshield and the rear-view mirror is so tiny!

My past does not define me. I have learned from my experiences, and I am making empowered financial decisions moving forward.

6. “Success Means Sacrificing My Happiness”
Many people fear that financial success comes at the cost of personal happiness—working long hours, stressing over money, or losing time with family.

When I started my business, I worried about this too. But I learned that success doesn’t have to be about overwork and burnout. It can be about building a life that aligns with your values and brings you joy. I love what I do and I now understand the saying “do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life.” I believe that if it’s important to you, it will happen.

I can create success in a way that aligns with my values and brings me joy.

7. “I Don’t Have Enough Time”
Midlife is often a stage of life filled with responsibilities—kids, aging parents, career shifts. The belief that there’s “no time” to focus on financial growth can keep people stuck.
When I left my job at 50, I had a lot on my plate. But I also realized that if I wanted change, I had to prioritize it. I made time, even in small ways, to invest in my future. Just like I make time today to keep studying and spend time with my family.

I prioritize what matters most, and my financial well-being is worth my time and effort.

The beliefs we hold about money and success shape our financial reality. If midlife has brought up doubts about what’s possible for you, remember that you have the power to shift your mindset. Challenge the narratives that keep you small, and replace them with ones that empower you. Abundance is not reserved for the young. It’s available to you at any stage of life—if you believe it is.

I want to tell you that dreams and desires change, and that’s ok. As you follow the path you are on, you are going to start to see things clearer. I started wanting to teach women how to budget so that they would feel in control of their limited resources and I am now more passionate about teaching them to create multiple income streams (more resources)… Because as I grow and meet other thought leaders and study with them, my business grows and I can see a bigger picture.

I’ve taken big risks and started over more than once, and I also want to tell you: it’s never too late to create the life you truly desire.
