Connecting the Dots: From Unconscious Competence to an Intentional YOU-Shaped Economy

Mary Reiss Farias

In this reflective article, Mary Reiss Farias shares how years spent building an economy around gymnastics eventually led to burnout, identity shifts, and the realization that true success begins with building an intentional YOU-shaped economy. Through the Economy Creators Framework, she explores the importance of self-image, leadership, authority-building, and creating an economy organized around who you are becoming rather than a single role or title.

Steve Jobs once famously said that “you can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards." For a long time, I lived this truth without even realizing it. I spent 37 years of my life—from the age of five until I was 42—with gymnastics at the center of my economy.

I was a competitive gymnast, a coach, a gym owner, and even an author of gymnastics books. On the surface, I was successful, but looking back, I realize I was what Bob Proctor calls an “unconscious competent." I was producing results, but I didn’t fully understand the universal laws or the internal structures that were actually driving them.

It wasn't until I took the time to look backward and connect the dots that I saw the flaw in my design. I had built my personal economy around something (gymnastics) rather than someone (myself). This approach is the quickest way to burnout, and eventually, I hit that wall. I felt trapped, tied down, and reactive, allowing my business to tell me who, what, and where I was supposed to be at all times.

Through this retrospective lens, I began to see that true leadership starts with owning your mind. I realized that to move from merely reacting to life to intentionally leading it, I needed to shift my identity from being “successful in gymnastics” to being "successful, period." That shift changed everything.

I began to see that the strongest economies are not built around one role, one title, one platform, or one business. They are built around the individual at the center of them.

What I now call:

A YOU-shaped economy.

A YOU-shaped economy is a model where you become the stable hub at the center of your own universe, with your interests, talents, ideas, experiences, leadership, relationships, and income streams expanding outward like spokes on a wheel.

Instead of your identity depending on one thing, your economy becomes an intentional extension of who you choose to be.

As I’ve been building and unveiling the Economy Creators framework publicly, I’ve noticed something interesting:
I’m actively using the very framework I teach.

This ebook is not just a product.

It is becoming:

  • blog posts
  • podcast discussions
  • workshops
  • community conversations
  • mastermind topics
  • visibility opportunities
  • authority assets
  • and a larger ecosystem of ideas and implementation

One idea.
Many expressions.

That realization has only reinforced my belief that intentional structure creates freedom. Over time, I codified these lessons into three essential dimensions:

Lead Yourself
Own your mind, stabilize your self-image, strengthen discipline, and move beyond the “Knowing/Doing Gap” through daily reinforcement and intentional study.

Lead Your Economy
Organize your unique expertise, experiences, leadership, and message into authority assets and intentional structures that circulate value.

Lead Others
Expand your influence by leading through example, contribution, collaboration, and leaving people with an “impression of increase.”

Your economy is already forming around the way you think, act, communicate, and show up every day. The question is whether you are building it intentionally.

By connecting your own dots, you can stop forcing growth on an unstable foundation and begin intentionally organizing your life into an integrated economy that supports who you are becoming.

Don’t wait to feel “ready.”

Start acting in harmony with the version of you that already has the economy you desire.

The ideas explored in this article are part of a much larger framework I’ve been developing called The Economy Creators Framework: The Framework to Building a YOU-Shaped Economy.

The framework is designed to help individuals:
✔ Lead Yourself
✔ Lead Your Economy
✔ Lead Others

by intentionally building a life, leadership model, and economy around their unique interests, talents, experiences, message, and strengths.

Rather than constantly chasing disconnected strategies, the goal is to create greater alignment, structure, visibility, and movement through intentional self-leadership and economic design.

Thank you for being part of the conversation and the unfolding of this framework.
